The goal of the workshop is to encourage and assist junior European researchers in authoring high quality submissions to major conferences in Systems and related areas (e.g., SOSP, EuroSys, NSDI, SIGCOMM, and CoNext). The workshop will focus primarily on the organization, presentation and writing of the submissions, and less on their technical issues.
The workshop will have two components: (1) paper preparation with extensive, online guidance from an experienced shepherd. (2) a full-day, in-person meeting, during the EuroSys 2007 conference http://eurosys.org/2007/, where junior researchers present their ideas, and receive feedback from their peers as well as many experts in the field.
We will assign an expert shepherd to work closely with each group of authors during the paper preparation period. The shepherds will provide detailed feedback about the structure and presentation of the work. The interaction could happen any time between January and October 2007, over a period of 2-3 months. We will also arrange for a technical writer to provide feedback on the final draft of the paper.
The workshop meeting will provide feedback from a wider body of experts. It will focus on how to better present the novelty/relevance of the research problems being attempted as well as the merits of the approaches being taken. Additionally, authors who complete the shepherding process prior to the meeting can seek input on the organization and structure of their paper.
Participation in the workshop is by invitation only. We intend to limit the number of attendees to work effectively. Invitations will be based on submissions received in response to this call. We anticipate most participants will be Ph.D. students, post-docs, or junior faculty at European institutions. However, we will also consider applications from outside Europe on a need basis.
If you would like to participate then you should submit the following: (a) A short outline (no more than 500 words) of your proposed paper, describing the main research challenges, your new ideas, and the progress you have made so far. (b) A letter of recommendation from your advisor, if you are a Ph.D. student.
Submissions should be in plain text (no attachments; simple ASCII text in the body of your message), in English, and submitted by email to Dejan.Kostic@epfl.ch or gummadi@mpi-sws.mpg.de. Expect a confirmation of the reception of your submission. Please include information about the forthcoming conferences where you intend to submit this work. Your advisor's statement of support should be sent directly in a separate email containing your name in the subject line.
This event is organized by EuroSys, The European Professional Society for Systems, as part of their work on promoting systems research in Europe.
